anybody who wants to get on the bandwagon fighting terrorism, that's fine. Same thing with Telegram so at the very least they can expose and provide a little sunlight to where these creepy bastards are crawling. Look, if you're cloud flare, the public has a right to know if you're keeping these questionable sites up. That doesn't mean ISIS can't continue to use Telegram.ĭan: I think what Anonymous is doing is applying pressure in the opposite direction. Leo: By the way, Telegram has responded by pulling down 22 ISIS related channels. They've also been, a lot of members of Daesh, the websites are built using Cloud Flare, which was in the news this week and Telegram, of course, so they've been taking down those accounts or at least listing these accounts. Leo: What does Anonymous say it's going to do?ĭan: Taking down Twitter accounts. But Anonymous is doing the same thing right back to them, so I certainly don't advocate for what Anonymous does, necessarily, but it's very interesting to see similar tactics deployed against Daesh.

When ISIS attacks a nation state, it's a symmetric, because they're small and they're using all these weird small ways to prick the large nations. I see what Anonymous is doing is this weird new symmetrical attack. That's an effective way to communicate about what this organization is doing. There are many controversial parts of their name, so using Daesh is those who trample the book. Leo: You covered the Occupy Wall Street movement, right?ĭan: Yeah, I've been at Occupy and at the UN covering Daesh as they say up there, or ISIL in large part because there's power in the word ISIS. say what you will about Anonymous, and they do look silly there, but they have had a pretty practical effect here. Leo: Do you think that at ISIS headquarters they're going, "Who?" Literally. Let it be known for the record I did not do that. Leo: It's almost like Jason Howell declared war against ISIS. You can't even say who is in it.Īlex: It's very similar to the TWiT production crew. Leo: Is Anonymous, first of all, Anonymous can't declare anything. Leo: It looks like a movie, doesn't it? It looks like it's straight out of Hollywood.Īlex: They think it looks good when in reality it doesn't. Here's the anonymous video announcing that some guy in a V for Vendetta mask announcing.Īlex: I can't take it seriously when they wear that stupid headgear. It's the battle of the social media guys. You almost could say the same thing about Anonymous. Which would you rather fight? This week, President Obama called ISIS a bunch of killers with great social media. Which would you rather fight? A thousand duck sized horses, or one horse sized duck. Of course, before the show, I said there was nothing to talk about, but now that I'm looking, it looks like there are a few things we can talk about. Also here, speaking of other guys, Alex Wilhelm. I was really thrilled when he told me that he hired you. It's great to be with the CBS interactive family. Nice to have you, but you're working out of the offices in New York.ĭan: Yeah. CBS Interactive, via the great folks at Tech Republic. When you first started working with us, you were at CBS radio, and now you are at. Leo: Your parents should have maybe named you Aerith.
